The 2016 Diaporos Block 5 (the new labels just say “single vineyard” not “Block 5”) is mostly Xinomavro, with 13% Syrah blended in. It was aged for 18 months in new French oak and comes in at 13.9% alcohol. After tasting through a bunch of silky and tannic Xinomavros, I came to this blend. Of all the Xinomavro-based wines this issue, this would be my favorite. In its youth, it seems lusher, more expressive and less closed. The wide-open Syrah may have something to do with that, but this Block 5 is pretty special as well. This will have a more approachable feel than a lot of young Xinomavros (including Kir-Yianni’s), but don’t be confused—there’s power underneath and plenty of aging ability. These are all just relative comments. There’s enough depth this year, not the most ever, perhaps, but enough. Then, it might win extra points for finesse and balance. It is this wine’s expressive fruit, beautiful finesse and long finish that are its most impressive features. You can try it now, if you must, but you’ll just be wasting it if you do. It will become far better with a few years in the cellar.

Markus Del Monego: Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black centre. Black truffles, toasters aroma, balmy character, ripe berries and dark cherries, mild spices, complex and rich with a slightly smoky character. On the palate well structured with opulent fruit, balmy character, complex finish and excellent length. 94
Andreas Larsson: Medium to deep ruby core and a lighter rim. Intense nose, fair amount of complexity, wild berries, smoke, truffle and spice. The palate has good density of fruit, rather supple texture, balanced freshness, a complex smoky/spiciness, elegant raspberry fruit and a long, smooth finish. Very promising. 93

The next Greek wine revolution, Kir-Yianni
Largely Xinomavro with a splash of Syrah, the 2008 Diaporos unleashes smoky/flinty nuances accompanied by lush blackcurrant, dried herbs, lead pencil and menthol. Deep and complex with mineral, chocolate, leather and blackberry with medium tannins evident on the finish.

Il Diaporos Vin de Pays d’Imathia è una delle migliori espressioni greche del vitigno Xinomavro: la vendemmia 2008 si presenta di colore rosso cupo, molto fitto con riflessi quasi bluastri, molto consistente nel calice. Generoso al naso, propone intense e complesse sfaccettature aromatiche di frutta nera matura, prugna, sigaro, cioccolato, tabacco biondo, pepe, cannella e cuoio. L’assaggio è coinvolgente, rivela da subito un’imponente struttura e una trama tannica matura e ben lavorata; da un denso strato di frutta matura emergono scintille di freschezza e sapidità, equilibrato e persistente; un vino maturo e già godibile a pieno, dimostra comunque buone possibilità di invecchiamento. Ottimo, tipico, generoso, da provare con un gustoso e succulento filetto al pepe.
