Ένα κρασί που φέρνει τα χαρακτηριστικά της ποικιλίας στα άκρα της.

Χρώμα βαθύ κόκκινο λαμπερό. Πυκνό άρωμα μικρών κόκκινων φρούτων, με νότες ζαμπόν και βανίλιας. Με ανακίνηση το άρωμα γίνεται ακόμη πιο σύνθετο, με μπαχαρικά να γίνονται πιο εύκολα αντιληπτά. Στόμα με γλύκα και τανίνες που για μερικά δευτερόλεπτα είναι σχετικά καλά κρυμμένες από το παχύ σώμα και στη συνέχεια ξαφνικά μουδιάζουν την γλώσσα, δίνοντας και την ανάλογη αίσθηση του πικρού. Οξύτητα καλά κρυμμένη για Ξινόμαυρο χάρη στην αλκοόλη. Στην επίγευση το στυφό, συνεπικουρούμενο από την οξύτητα, έχει εγκατασταθεί με επιμονή.

Βαθμός 92 /100 για ένα κρασί που δεν διστάζει να κρύψει την καταγωγή του. Πηγαίνει μέχρι το άκρο τόσο την αρωματική όσο και γευστική παρουσία του. Δεν υπάρχει μικρό κόκκινο φρούτο ή μπαχαρικό, αν θέλετε να το ονομάσετε για την περιγραφή αυτή του κρασιού, για το οποίο μπορεί κάποιος να σας διαψεύσει. Η αίσθηση του βαρελιού έρχεται να συμπληρώσει την αρωματική παρουσία του που κινείται ακόμη σε τόνους φρεσκάδας, αφού το βαρέλι έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί στην σωστή δόση για να ενισχύσει και όχι για να σκεπάσει. Η κλασική ντομάτα είναι σχεδόν απούσα καθώς είναι καλά χωνεμένη μέσα στο κόκκινο φρούτο από βατόμουρα και φραγκοστάφυλα. Το αρωματικό δυναμικό στο στόμα βοηθά στη δημιουργία της αίσθησης του πάχους σε ένα κρασί που δεν διστάζει να επιδείξει τις τανίνες του, μουδιάζοντας ευχάριστα την γλώσσα. Μια μικρή παρένθεση για την παρατήρηση ότι πρόκειται για το τέλειο κρασί για αληθινά καυτερά φαγητά. Το στυφό, τροποποιώντας όχι μόνον τις πρωτεΐνες του σάλιου αλλά και αυτές τη γλώσσας, κτίζει ένα προστατευτικό στρώμα στο στόμα περιορίζοντας την αίσθηση το καψίματος κάνοντάς τη να φαίνεται πολύ λιγότερο από όσο είναι στην πραγματικότητα. Ο συνδυασμός αλκοόλης και τανινών δίνει την αίσθηση του πλούτου, δημιουργώντας μια υπερβολική αίσθηση που φτάνει στο όριο του άγριου. Είναι προφανές ότι πρόκειται για ένα κρασί που θα δώσει το μέγιστο μετά από μια δεκαετία αλλά και σήμερα, πάρα τον βίαιο χαρακτήρα του είναι ευχάριστο με τον τρόπο που μόνον το Ξινόμαυρο ξέρει να κάνει.

The bouquet is quiet at first blush, but five spice and white pepper change the game just as you are about  to move onto a perfectly balanced palate, its fine-boned structure formed and trained by fine tannins. The flavours refuse to be pigeon-holed, with notes of herb, earth and cedary oak.

The 2015 Ramnista is the winery’s classic Xinomavro, aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol. When last seen, it was a little tight with sharp edges—to some extent, that’s the style. Let’s check in. This has fleshed out nicely, seeming rounder and softer in terms of texture—but there is still lots of power hiding underneath. It pops up to the foreground pretty promptly. Overall, this is a bit more approachable, but that doesn’t mean it’s ready. It really needs a couple of more years to become more expressive and better balanced. In other words, continue on as originally directed. Everything looks good.

The 2016 Ramnista, all Xinomavro, was aged for 16 months in 30% new French oak. It comes in at 13.7% alcohol. After tasting a run of rustic Xinomavros that seemed to have endless power and no mid-palates for this issue, this Ramnista changed the channel. This is hardly a bottling that is known for being shy in terms of power, but it has the balance and the mid-palate depth to soak up the power this year. It seems surprisingly fruit forward, although very dry. Granted that both are not here together, this seems fuller in the mid-palate and more fruit-driven than the 2015, for better or for worse. The 2015 might have more energy. Earthy and complex, while still showing good structure, this looks like a fine Ramnista. It might also be a relatively approachable Ramnista. It will still age well.

Andreas Larsson – Medium deep, ruby-red colour. Slight hint of evolution, but looks fairly youthful. Pure nose. Still quite young with mostly primary fruit here. Combination of red and dark berries, with cherry, plum, some dried spices. Palate has medium weight with a quite dense tannic core. So a lot of tannins in here, but I think that is part of the style. It is not really harsh, it is still just showing its youth with that tannic presence. On top of that, we do have attractive fruit with red and dark berries. There are some hints of chocolate, like praline spices. Quite traditional style. There is no indication of new oak. There is a good length. I should rather say this is a traditional grape variety, but in terms of vini cation, it still feels modern with a good purity of fruit. It should certainly have a ne potential.

Täytyy myöntää, että jos tämän viini olisi edessäni sokkomaistiaisissa, en kuuna päivänä olisi osannut sijoittaa sitä Kreikkaan. Todennäköisin vaihtoehto olisi ollut italialainen Barbaresco, sillä viinin aromit ja tanniinisuus ovat juuri sen tyyppisiä. Upeassa, mutta tuoreessa maussa on kypsiä, aromaattisia punaisia marjoja ja hedelmiä, joita säestää hienostunut mausteisuus. Nämä aromit ovat hienosti levittyneet antoisaan pitkään makuun. Parasta viinissä ovat kuitenkin tanniinit, joita on runsaasti, mutta ne ovat erittäin maukkaat ja ne antavat viinin maun loppuun tyylikkään purennan.

This was a tricky vintage, with some summer heat spikes and rain at the end of harvest, but it didn’t seem to affect Ramnista negatively. Pulled from vineyards planted on lighter soils, the intention being to produce a Xinomavro with finesse and fragrance rather than brawn, Ramnista in 2010 is a beauty, redolent of cherry blossoms and tobacco leaves, mushrooms and herbs, the aromas held together by juicy, frisky cranberry flavors. It’s tangy and bright as well as firm and lasting, the flavors pinned to a cool, earthy minerality that holds them fresh and long.

Markus Del Monego MW – Dark purple red with garnet red hue. Elegant nose with aroma reminiscent of fresh berries, prunes, mild spices, vanilla and toasted oak, with hints of aromatic herbs. On the palate elegant with youthful tannins, crisp acidity and good length. A wine to wait for. 91

The next Greek wine revolution, Kir-Yianni

Stellios Boutari notes that the Xinomavro is Kir-Yianni’s “signature grape” and that it is similar in some ways to the Italian Nebbiolo variety due to its tannin/acid structure. Indeed, this sample showed ripe, sweet black cherry compote, kirsch, black olive, red liquorice and a touch of violet on the nose. Dry with dusty plum, some smoky overtones and a hint of leather, it is still quite young with high tannin and acidity. A bit rough on its own but an absolutely perfect match with Estiatorio Volos’ Lamb Sausage with Wild Mushroom and Thyme Jus.

The 2007 RAMNISTA is a first look, pre-release, based on a winery tasting only. This is beautifully textured, soft and velvety, ripe and surprisingly rich early on. Lurking underneath is still that Xinomavro crispness and power. It is always best to see how these work after they’ve knit together in the bottle and then had some hours of air, so we will have to give this another look. Still, this looks like a very promising Ramnista, perhaps the best I’ve tasted. Drink-2012-2027.

Dark and rich fruitcake curranty with a peaty whiff about it. Really deep. Smells of brick dust and ash. Super-pure fruit in the mouth with cedary spiciness and coffee ground smokiness at the back. Big tannins and mouth-watering acid and lip-smacking tangy citrus, too. You’ll love this if you enjoy serious sangiovese and nebbiolo. This is the wine for charcoal-grilled or roasted lamb.

The medium to dark ruby-colored 2000 Ramnista bursts from the glass with loads of blackberries, cassis, and road tar. An excellent value, this medium to full-bodied effort is a muscular wine packed with dark, asphalt-laced fruits. Its character displays outstanding depth and concentration as well as a long, tannin-studded finish. Produced entirely from Xinomavro, this would be an ideal pairing with Greek lamb dishes. Drink it between 2006 and 2012.

Είναι η Ράμνιστα το καλύτερο Ξινόμαυρο της Ελλάδος; Όταν δοκιμάζεις μία παλιά φιάλη, όπως αυτή του 2000, η απάντηση είναι «ναι»! Πόσο όμορφα έχει παλαιώσει αυτό το εξαιρετικό κρασί! Το χρώμα του μέτριας έντασης, ώριμο, κοκκινοκεραμιδί. Η μύτη του πανδαισία, γεμάτη από πολύπλοκα και μεστά αρώματα καφέ, γλυκών μπαχαρικών, πιπεριού, δέρματος, χόρτων, που μορφώνουν ένα αριστοκρατικό σύνολο που θυμίζει παλαιωμένο Barolo. Γευστικά ξεπροβάλλει ο πλούτος, το στιβαρό σώμα, οι αισθητές αλλά λιωμένες για τα δεδομένα της ποικιλίας τανίνες και η ισορροπημένη οξύτητα. Ένα ιδιαίτερο κρασί για ιδιαίτερα και απαιτητικά γούστα. Θέλει κόκκινο κρέας, κυνήγι ή σκληρά και πολύ ώριμα τυριά.

One whiff and the head begins to spin, so intoxicating are the spice and warm cherry scents emanating from this gorgeous xinomavro. Those scents read on the palate, covering it like a cashmere blanket, warm, soft and weightless all at once. There’s a tang that keeps its dense, cherry-jam concentration lively, but not so much that it loses its elegant grace. Drink it now to be impressed, give it another five to ten years to be astounded.

Αρκετά σκούρο κόκκινο χρώμα. Στη μύτη, βαθύ, πολύπλοκο, αρωματικό δυναμικό, με μυρωδιές πιπεριού, κανέλας, καφέ και της κλασικής για τη “Νάουσα” ντομάτας. Στο στόμα ξεκινάει με γλύκα που δεν καταφέρνει να κρύψει εντελώς το νευρώδες της οξύτητάς του. Πλούσιο, με ισχυρές και λίγο “άγριες” ταννίνες, που όμως είναι ζουμερές και καθόλου στεγνές, δείχνοντας ότι το κρασί έχει ακόμη μέλλον. Προέρχεται από σωστά ωριμασμένα σταφύλια, κάτι που εκτός από τα πολύπλοκα αρώματα της “μύτης”, του δίνει εξαιρετική δομή και πλούτο στο στόμα.
