The 2018 Paranga white is the typical 80/20 blend of Roditis and Malagousia, unoaked and coming in at 12.5% alcohol. Even as vintages vary, this has been a pretty consistent white of late—it’s a perfect summer refresher with good acidity, a clean finish and perky fruit. I’ve liked them in lighter years and riper years. It seems to work out. This walks down the middle of the road, and it seems to hit a sweet spot. Perhaps, too, I’m seeing it a bit earlier than normal. In any event, while this doesn’t have a lot of body, it has beautiful persistence and purity. The fruit, in its youth, seems just-crushed. It always finishes dry and lively. This is in fine form. It’s hard to rate it much higher given its modest concentration, but it’s also hard to be overly churlish given how invigorating it is. My only advice: drink it very young. Being fresh is what it does best. It isn’t likely to reward aging even if it holds.

A blend of roditis and malagousia, this is fresh and light, with orange blossom scents and green peach flavor, the texture satiny but not heavy.

Crushable Whites

Vibrant, fresh, fruity – all signs, price included, point to a perfect summer wine. It’s made by Kir-Yianni, owned by the Boutari family, one of the oldest and most respected producers of fine wine in Greece. Note: one bottle will not be enough.

A 100% Roditis-based white wine showing a fragrant aroma of melon, citrus, white flowers, almond and a hint of anise. Mid-weight and slightly viscous on the palate, its flavours of mineral, citrus, melon and a hint of vanilla fade slowly on the long, memorable finish.

The 2009 PETRA is 100% Roditis. Normally a well priced and rather attractive Northern Greek bottling of an indigenous grape, it shows well again in this year, a more difficult vintage for much of Greece. Rather full and penetrating in its youth, relatively speaking, considering that this is a rather delicate grape typically, this is aromatic, clean and beautifully balanced. It is a pleasure to drink at the moment and actually seems a bit mouth-coating as it warms up, lingering more than I thought that it could. Just drink it young. It is always possible these will hold gracefully for a few years, but drinking them as young and fresh as possible is a lot safer. It is great right now. Drink now-2012.

Best Buys

Vintage Assessments, Canada’s most comprehensive, reliable and detailed buying guide to new wines and spirits, recommended Petra 2007 as a best buy wine at $14,95. Tangy Ripe Pear, 100% roditis, has a light straw colour. Attractive, slightly spicy, honeyed. Fairly dry, harmonious, medium bodied, slightly spicy, pear puree flavours with a lingering finish. Try with poultry and seafood. Ready to drink.

Herbaceous white wines: Sauvignon Blanc, Albarino, Roditis and more
This charming wine from northeast Greece is made from Roditis, the grape most often used in resin-scented Retsina. It fascinates with aromas of chive, pine and lemon zest. The flavors are savory, fresh and bright, with an almost pine-sap oily texture, and a slight bitter-almond finish. At Woodland Hills Wine Co. and K & L Wine Merchants, about $13
