A nice value, this concentrated and balanced blend shows fine depth. It has a solid mouthfeel and complexity from the grape blend.

ANDREAS LARSSON: Quite dark ruby red colour. Plum, dark berries, pepper and some spicy notes lead to a full palate with young texture, present tannin, integrated wood, fresh dark berry notes, some hints of chocolate and a rather long finish, should develop well.

MARKUS DEL MONEGO MW : Dark purple red with violet hue and black centre. Opulent but somehow closed nose, mild spices and vanilla, blackberries and black cherries. On the palate firm but balanced tannins, juicy fruit, very youthful character and good length.

The next Greek wine revolution, Kir-Yianni

A Xinomavro/Syrah/Merlot blend and the first wine Stellios himself crafted. “I’m not a winemaker; I’m a mathematician!” He admitted. Well, maybe we need more mathematicians as winemakers. Intense, forward aromas of smoke, black raspberry, tar and wet slate follow through in the mouth with a big, meaty, solid core of black fruit buttressed by characteristically muscular tannins and acidity.

The 2007 Dyo Elies is a blend of Syrah (60%), Merlot (30%) and Xinomavro (10%), aged for 14 months in a mixture of French and American oak. Very Northern Rhone-ish, this has quite an elegant mid-palate, a serious tannic backbone and a sharp, bright feel to it. Alternately gamey and sweet, the sweet notes popping up from the oak, the game consistently cutting through it, this overall has an elegant feel to it in the mid-palate, but intensity of flavor and some hard, drying tannins on the finish. There is not much mid-palate concentration, but it has some charm – at least when the tannins moderate. Drink now-2020.

This wine has a sultry nose of plum, anise, red berry and tobacco. On the palate, it offers a full, ripe fruit character, with an overall easy-going berry-and-spice combination. A balanced red blend with widespread appeal. VOS Selections.

Best of 2009

Wines To Try

Kir-Yianni is good at reds too. This is a Vin de Pays d’Imathia composed of 60 per cent syrah, 30 per cent merlot and 10 per cent xinomavro. It reminded me of a Rhone blend, with its smoky, licorice and black pepper-tinged bramble flavours and its dense, chewy tannins. Notes of cocoa and vanilla reveal a touch of oak but it’s been deployed with care, and there’s a lift of orange zest on the finish. This wine shouts out for a richly flavoured beef or venison stew.
